It seems  that  in  our  time  and age  philosophy and literature manifest them-
selves 'in  an almost interchangeable way. Not only do they encroach mutually
upon  each  other's  seemingly  unique  territory,  but  they  intermingle  to  the
point of appearing indistinct. Existential thinkers like Gabriel Marcel, Ortega
y Gasset,  Unamuno,  and  Buber,  as  well  as  the  most  recent writings  of the
French  philosophers  recur  to  the  literary type  of experience  as  reflected in
life  on the  one  hand; whereas, on the  other hand, the contemporary novel's
experiments  with  philosophical  issues  and  the  contemporary  drama  of
Ionesco, Beckett, Brecht, Sartre, Camus  are  philosophical to their very core.
The  theories  of literary criticism are themselves either sectors of philosophies
or philosophical theories themselves.
Why  then the  need  to investigate the relationship between philosophy and
literature, a need so imperative that, to respond to it, I have founded the first
international society (ISPL) devoted to such an investigation?
