The Bible is a unique book. It has been a worldwide bestseller for decades. In whole or in part, it has been translated into almost two thousand languages or dialects. It claims more than forty authors who wrote over a period of fifteen hundred years and in three different original languages. Yet it has a striking unity that captivates and mystifies. While many do not accept the key claims of the Bible on issues such as prophecy and salvation, even they generally admit that it is superb literature and deserves study on that account alone.

Unfortunately, many of us are not as familiar with the Bible as we would like to be. We have heard a number of individual stories many times. We may even have heard many sermons on key passages. But we are not really sure how the Bible all fits together. Intuitively, we feel that it has a structure and unity, that it has major themes that can be traced throughout as well as historical continuity. I cannot count the number of times that my students have said something like, “I thought I knew the Old [or New] Testament because I have heard the stories so many times. But now I’m beginning to understand how it all fits together. Suddenly it all makes sense.” It is that experience that has led to this work.

Even scholars tend to specialize on particular aspects of the Bible. Consequently, while countless surveys of the individual testaments and works on individual books have been written, very few works survey the whole Bible as a unit. That is the purpose of this book.
