Excerpt from The Second Index to Book-Prices Current, Vol. 11: For the Years 1897 to 1906 When considered as a whole, the result of the past season's sales cannot be regarded as very satisfactory, notwithstanding the high average disclosed. Nearly all' the very important books were sold on the few occasions mentioned, the remain ing collections being productive of very little, though some of them were extensive enough and, in their way, of considerable interest. It may be said, generally, that while collectors' books of the highest grade - as, for instance, the first edition of Walton's Compleat Angler, which reached on March 18th - show no tendency to decline in value, but rather the con trary, though the sum named does not constitute a record price (van Antwerp, those books of an ordinary character, such as are met with every day and appeal to by far the greater number of buyers for obvious reasons, are to be got now at much less cost than was possible some ten or a dozen years ago. They seem, in fact, to be gravitating to a more reason able level; and while it is, even now, within the power of any one who chooses to form a good and useful Library for about a third less than would have been feasible at the period to which I have referred, it is quite likely and, indeed, exceedingly probable that the next few years will witness a still greater reduction. The reason of this shrinkage in prices can hardly be ascribed to indifference on the part of book-buyers, or to scarcity of money. It seems attributable to the enormous number of books of one kind or another - many of them almost worthless - which are being thrown on the market, the mass dragging down with it books of greater but still of second-rate importance. From the book-buyer's point of view this is, of course, eminently satisfactory, though what is his gain is necessarily the seller's loss, especially if the latter is or was a collector of some years standing.
