Thermal radiation is a ubiquitous aspect of nature, and any object with a finite
temperature is capable of emitting thermal radiation. What is thermal radiation?
Different people with different backgrounds may give different answers to this
question. For people who design boilers and heaters, thermal radiation refers to
light rays from high-temperature bodies. For people who are interested in micro-
scopic phenomena, thermal radiation is an electromagnetic (EM) wave generated
by thermal motions of charges in the matter. For many physicists, the quantum
origin of thermal radiation is more interesting, and it can be understood as the
fluctuations of quantized energy levels inside the matter. It would be instruc-
tive to discuss the profound implications of thermal radiation systematically in
a single book.
The writing of this book was inspired by the rapid development of study on
micro- and nanoscale thermal radiation (MNTR), which has made great progress
not only in theoretical and experimental exploration but also in many applica-
tions associated with energy harvesting and conversion, radiative engineering for
cooling, camouflage, imaging, and so on. In order to make the book accessible
to readers who may not have any background in thermal radiation, we present
a comprehensive introduction to various aspects of thermal radiation, including
theory, numerical methods, and experimental techniques, in a coherent fashion
starting from the macroscopic description of thermal radiation heat transfer to
microscopic treatment in the form of EM waves.
