Работы над проектом Ту-22М были начаты в ОКБ Туполева в 1965 г. Из соображений секретности эта тема на всех уровнях декларировалась, как глубокая модернизация Ту-22К, и если в начале работ над проектом это более менее соответствовало действительности, то в ходе развития проекта общего у них осталось тактическое назначение, да бомбоотсек, способный вмещать до 12 т. бомб. В результате проект самолета «145», получивший официальное обозначение Ту-22М, в ходе своего развития превратился в совершенно новую машину, имевшую мало сходства с Ту-22. В книге рассказано об истории работы над проектом, боевом применении и устройстве этой машины.
