The Officers and Ratings of the U-Bootwaffe have served their 'Heimat' faithfully in two world wars, during which they operated all across the globe. The widely respected writing duo of Jon Sutherland and Diane Canwell, who jointly have a shared passion for maritime and aviation history, have in their latest collaboration together decided to examine the U-Bootwaffe through the use of some rare and recently discovered image collections which have never before been published. The contents of these collections have been restored and digitally enhanced using their original negatives (where possible) to illustrate with fascinating detail two separate periods of German maritime history. The Kaiserliche Marine images come from Oberstabsbootsmann Friedrich Pohl, who served on board two highly successful U-Boats - Seiner Majestät U-25 and U-33. Alongside the usual images of U-Boats under construction or docked in harbour, are several almost intimate portraits of the crew of both U-Boats and surface actions including the sinking of Allied Merchantmen in the North Sea by the U-Boats gun crew. The Kriegsmarine's images are extracted from two individual collections, one of which is unfortunately unrecorded, while the other belongs to Kapitänleutnant Herbert Brüninghaus (1910-1987) who started his career with the U-Bootwaffe as an Obersteuermann or Navigator. He served in this role on board U-38 for several 'War Cruises' before being sent to complete the U-Boat commanders course in late 1941. At the successful completion of that Course, and most likely due to his extensive navigational experience, he was retained as an instructor with 21. Unterseebootsschulflottille (Pilau, East Prussia). While with this Flotilla he commanded two training U-Boats, was briefly sent to commission and command a new U-Boat in 1943, but shortly afterwards was ordered to return back to Pilau and never carried out any further War Cruises.
