60 reviewsA word about the nature of the dialogues that I use in this book. The “other” with whom I dialogue is usually my image of the skeptical reader, a person who challenges me and forces me to be clear, stick to the point, and not fall victim to the very things that I am warning about. Sometimes this voice is a man, sometimes a woman, and sometimes a child. I do not always like the “other,” but then the “other” does not always like me. It would be a mistake for the reader to imagine that this is the way I usually talk to myself while I am working with a patient or a student or friend. I am actually quite kind in my inner dialogue with myself, and yet from time to time I do harshly bring myself up straight if my mind wanders or if I am being too sympathetic instead of empathetic. Basically, in this book I am talking with my imagined reader—you.
This book addresses the personal side of Jungian psychology based on my personal participation in the act of understanding. Large portions of this book address dreams, which are perhaps the most personal expression of the psyche. In remembering and telling of dreams, as well as listening to and searching for meaning in dreams, one is enmeshed in the personalities of both the dreamer and the listener. Jung remarked that each school of psychology is a personal confession. So is this book a confession of my commitment to personal understanding. Its form, format, and images are approximations on the way to understanding and clarifying Jungian psychology.
