n the International edition of Wallach’s Interpretation of Diagnostic Tests,
L.V. Rao and L. Michael Snyder have done commendable work. It is with
great pleasure that I am editing the current edition and feel extremely proud to
present its South Asian edition. South Asia is a diverse region, where lifestyle
diseases similar to the developed western world coexist with the infectious dis-
eases typical of the malnourished, underprivileged developing world. This book
has been designed keeping in mind the physicians and other health professionals
practicing in this region, who need to be alert about local diseases while being
equally knowledgeable about global health problems.
To this end, I have included the diagnostic tests of some diseases which are
prevalent in tropical regions such as leprosy, enteric fever, shigellosis, dengue,
chikungunya and elaborated upon diseases such as tuberculosis and viral hepa-
itis, which present in a variety of forms. To make this book locally relevant,
have deliberately added some tests which, though not extremely accurate, are
widely used in the low-resource settings of South Asia.
In view of the recent  COVID-19 pandemic, which has incapacitated the
world, a brief section on the recommended tests and their interpretation has
been included, based on the existing knowledge. Two tests have been elaborated
upon which are presently being used most frequently for its diagnosis.
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to edit this highly relevant and
nformative book and hope that our readers find it enjoyable and useful.
