Work for a Million, the second novel about Helen Keremos, lesbian
P.I., came out in 1987. I wrote it on a Commodore 64 computer
in the mid-eighties, in the back room of my used book store in
Toronto.
It was the distant world of the eighties when ‘security’ was
strictly lowercase and not a great generator of jobs, and when
everyone smoked.
Work for a Million isn’t about the eighties. It is of the eighties,
having been written when what is now the past was still the
future. We didn’t know the Soviet Empire was on its last legs,
and 9/11 was just an emergency number. For this Bedside Press
edition, not a word has been changed, added, or deleted from the
