Welcome to Xenos Rampant, a set of miniature wargaming rules for fighting science fiction
battles for fun, free of adherence to specific model ranges, canonical settings, or ever-expanding
supplements. Armies (usually referred to as ‘Detachments’ from here on) are typically composed of
around 30 to 50 models. Most players prefer to use 28mm scale models, although other scales are
just as playable, such as 15mm, 10mm, or 6mm. Smaller scales are generally more cost-effective,
particularly when it comes to armoured vehicles.
The rules treat each squad of models (generally referred to in the rules as a ‘Unit’) as a single
entity, so the models composing a unit can be based in any way you wish, whether individually, on
movement trays, or permanently glued in groups on multibases. In the latter case, you may have
some issues fitting multibased models within particularly dense terrain, such as ruins or forests,
but friendly players will usually come up with some sort of fair solution between themselves. The
authors’ traditional preference is to individually base models, although he’s coming around to
using movement trays to speed up play.
Xenos Rampant is part of a family of games designed by Daniel Mersey, the first of which was
the historical medieval Lion Rampant rulebook. The Rampant series focuses on keeping games
simple and fun, rather than requiring extensive book-keeping or the need to constantly reference
the rulebook when manoeuvring units, and that the basic rules for each game in the series should
be familiar to players of other Rampant games. That ethos has been carried across to Xenos
Rampant, although the very different nature of modern and (hypothetical) futuristic warfare to
that of medieval clashes has necessitated some changes to the rules. Some of these may be familiar
to players of the other post-medieval games that utilise the Rampant game engine, but others are
new to the family.
