The British Grassland Society (BGS) is very pleased to welcome all delegates to the 23rd symposium of the European Grassland Federation (EGF) held in Reading, United Kingdom.

The three themes of the symposium are:

1. Agronomic considerations of multi-species swards

2. Animal production impacts of multi-species swards

3. Impacts of multi-species swards on the environment
-
Multi-species swards is enormously topical at the moment with wide ranging research investigating many aspects relating to diversity, productivity, resilience and environmental sustainability. The integration of diverse species into pasture systems offers opportunities to help address the many and varied challenges currently facing farmers, policy makers and the wider industry. There is particular interest in the potential to positively influence soil health, the environment, animal nutrition, health, and welfare, resilience to extreme weather, and the reduction in the use of purchased inputs. There are however many challenges relating to multi- species swards in successfully achieving and optimising their implementation.
