Author: Jim Percy
This is the second volume of writings and speeches by Jim Percy, one of the founders and longtime central leaders of the Democratic Socialist Perspective (DSP) until his death in 1992.
The seven pieces included here are reports Jim delivered at conferences and leadership meetings of the DSP (known as the Socialist Workers Party during this period), spanning the years 1980 to 1987.
This was a time of significant political upheaval both in Australia and globally. Between 1978 and 1979, a series of anti-imperialist revolutions took place—in Afghanistan, Iran, Grenada, and Nicaragua. Domestically, the March 1983 federal election resulted in the ousting of the Fraser government and ushered in over a decade of ALP rule under Hawke and Keating. The ALP’s general neoliberal orientation, along with the wage-restraining Accord between the ALP and ACTU, led to widespread disillusionment.
Throughout the 1980s, the Socialist Workers Party remained a small cadre organization of only a few hundred members. However, it was highly active and responded dynamically to political opportunities while steadfastly maintaining its core Marxist-Leninist principles.
During this decade, the DSP undertook significant re-evaluation of several key issues—Trotskyism and the Fourth International, international alliances, the Labor Party, and strategies for building a mass socialist party. This critical self-reflection was essential for effectively meeting the challenges of the era.
