Practical tips for short clinical case • Always practice each case in 5:30 minutes • Avoid time pressure, so always take a slow start o Never look at watch rather one should be well practiced to finish in time o Follow focused scanning looking for clues - Follow FAST PACES schemes of inspection learnt during online or live course o For time management set the priorities according to clues e.g. in case of abdomen if you find palmar erythema and spider nevi on inspection, focus on spleen, liver and ascites in abdomen • Ignore the examiners even if they come closer to observe your methods i.e. just concentrate upon examination • Take help from the examiners when required, if really required e.g. while using instruments sometimes one may need to ask the examiner to switch on or unlock the device e.g. different fundoscopes may have different lock systems • Never examine the covered patient that would fail you badly i.e. always ask for proper exposure • Finish in a professional way i.e. with same pace, don’t get panic and hasty as sometimes happens when the examiner warns you about short time left Presentation • Never look back at the patient while presenting the case • It must be short, crispy, slow with pauses over 20 to 30 seconds • Present just positive signs in sequence • Mention important negatives at the end in sequence Diagnosis or differentials • After presentation if sure, put your diagnosis first then differentials however if not sure present your differentials • If differentials don’t contain the diagnosis then examiners usually prompt you to present more differentials - so take advantage of prompting by the examiners • Take advantage of clues by the examiners if they offer you
