“Stress” has been dubbed the “Health Epidemic of the 21st Century” by the World Health Organization and is estimated to cost American businesses up to $300 billion a year. The effect of stress on our emotional and physical health can be devastating. In a recent US study, over 50% of individuals felt that stress negatively impacted work productivity. Between 1983 and 2009, stress levels increased by 10-30% among all demographic groups in the United States.
There is a vast literature on the possible role of stress in the causation and/or exacerbation of disease in most organ systems of the body. Inextricably linked to anxiety, stress plays a pivotal role in mental disorders includ- ing phobias, major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
The intense public, research, and clinical interest in stress coupled with our experience with the Encyclopedia of Stress (2000 and 2007) prompted the publication of a multiauthor Handbook of Stress comprised of self- contained volumes. The present volume on concepts, cognition, emotion and behavior, is the first in this new Handbook series.
